Kappa Alpha Theta (ΚΑΘ) is an international sorority founded in January 27, 1870 at DePauw University. A sorority presently has 124 chapters at colleges & universities through a United States and Canada with a sum initiated membership of 170,000. Presently, these are one of a top 5 big sororities.

History
Kappa Alpha Theta, likewise referred to as Theta, was a 1st sorority, though it was started potentially prior to a word "sorority" was coined. Kappthe Alpha Theta wwhen founded as a number one Greek-letter fraternity for women inside 1870 & was established to give women a trend lines class action in the so mostly-male college globe at what is okay, DePauw University. Indiana Asbury, when a university was known so, officially opened its doors to women around 1867, xxx years fallowing a college was 1st established. 4 women, Bettie Locke (Hamilton), Alice Allen (Bryant), Bettie Tipton (Lindsay) & Hannah Fitch (Shaw), sought to produce an organization for women that would provide the encouragement & trend lines that would draw women to co-ed colleges & facilitate the babies attain a degree. It was by owning these ideals around mind that a foursome women founded Kappa Alpha Theta, & believed in the Fraternity's nature and severity across its members' lasting loyalty to both more & to the Fraternity ideals.

Kappa Alpha Theta, a number one Greek-letter organizatiin known among women, was depending around a share on deuce Fraternities by owning which Bettie Locke experienced call for; Beta Theta Pi, her father's fraternity, and Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji), her brother's fraternity. Bettie got numbers of friends inside Fiji, & once of these asked her to get into his badge as a token of friendly relationship, Bettie declined; because she did non underst& a secrets and purposes which a letters represented, she said, she may not have on the two. Though there was occasionally talk about initiating Bettie into the fraternity, it instead presented her by having a silver fruit basket etched by having their letters. This ideal hwhen been integrated into a todays practices of Kappa Alpha Theta, as lone initiated members of a Fraternity (world health organization understand the meaning one letters) could put on Theta's letters.

Impressed sustaining the fraternity ideals, Bettie searched for a women's counterpart. Searching for none, she followed her father's guide to start out her have. So Kappa Alpha Theta was conceived. Bettie & her friend Alice Allen together wrote the constitutiin, planned ceremonies, designed the badge, & sought more women on campus worthy of membership. Bettie Tiptin & Hannah Fitch initiated themselves on January 27, 1870, becoming a foremost Greek-letter fraternity known among women.

These quaternion women with pride bore their black & gold badges to Asbury's chapel in March 14. A Alpha Chapter at Asbury grew to Xxii sisters. Soon Kappa Alpha Theta spread to more colleges by using Bettie's establishment of the Beta Chapter at Indiana University inside Might of the equivalent month.

Through the years, Kappa Alpha Theta has grown to its todays size of 124 college chapters, 282 alumnae groups, & to a higher degree 170,000 members.
